How it works

Zopiclone belongs to a group of medicines called 'Z-drugs', which act on the brain to help you fall asleep more easily and stay asleep through the night. The 3.75mg strength is typically the recommended starting dose, particularly for older adults or those new to sleep medication.

How to take

Take one tablet immediately before going to bed, only when you can have a full night's sleep (7–8 hours). Do not take with alcohol. Treatment is usually limited to short courses (often no longer than 2–4 weeks, including any tapering) to reduce the risk of dependence.

Possible side effects

  • A bitter or metallic taste in the mouth
  • Drowsiness the next day
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Rarely, memory problems or unusual behaviour during sleep

  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy the next day.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Not suitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or for people with severe breathing problems.
  • Risk of dependence — only use as directed and for the shortest time needed.
