Read the full guidance Short-term treatment for severe situational anxiety
Where clinically appropriate, a short, monitored course of a benzodiazepine (e.g. diazepam, lorazepam) may be considered for severe situational anxiety — strictly time-limited.
- Signposting to talking therapies
For ongoing anxiety or generalised anxiety disorder, talking therapies (e.g. CBT) are usually first-line — we'll point the way.

Essential advice
Important things to know before starting any treatment
General guidance to help you use medicines safely. This is not a substitute for the advice of your pharmacist or doctor.
Travelling with your medicine
Carry medicines in their original packaging with the dispensing label, plus a copy of your prescription or a covering letter. Some countries restrict opioids, benzodiazepines and other controlled drugs — check the embassy of your destination before flying. For controlled drugs, you may need a personal export licence if travelling for 3 months or more.
Driving and machinery
Sedating medicines can affect your reaction time, judgement and ability to drive safely. It is illegal in the UK to drive while impaired by medicine, even if it has been prescribed. If in doubt, do not drive — speak to your pharmacist.
Alcohol and other medicines
Avoid alcohol with sedating medicines (sleep aids, opioids, benzodiazepines, sedating antihistamines) — combined effects can be dangerous. Always tell the pharmacist about every medicine, supplement or herbal product you take.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Many medicines are not suitable in pregnancy or breastfeeding, or need extra caution. Always tell the pharmacist if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding before starting any new treatment.
When to seek urgent help
Call 999 for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, sudden confusion, severe allergic reaction, or if you suspect an overdose. Use NHS 111 for urgent but non-emergency advice. Samaritans (116 123) are available 24/7 if you are struggling emotionally.
Grounding & crisis support
If you feel overwhelmed, try a simple grounding step: name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste. Slow your breathing — inhale 4 seconds, hold 4, exhale 6. If you are in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself, call 999, NHS 111, or Samaritans on 116 123 — free, 24/7.
Take the next step toward better sleep, less stress, and better pain support.
