How it works

Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the calming effect of GABA in the brain, reducing the intensity of severe anxiety. It is short-acting, which can make it useful for time-limited situational anxiety, but it is not a long-term solution.

How to take

Adults: typically 1mg taken when needed for severe anxiety, or as directed. Treatment is intended for very short courses (often days, not weeks) to reduce the risk of dependence. Do not increase the dose without pharmacist advice.

Possible side effects

  • Drowsiness or sedation
  • Light-headedness or unsteadiness, especially in older adults
  • Reduced concentration or memory
  • Muscle weakness
  • Less commonly: low mood, confusion or paradoxical agitation

Important warnings

  • Risk of dependence and tolerance — only used short term (typically a few days, up to 2–4 weeks including tapering).
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy or impaired.
  • Do not combine with alcohol or other sedating medicines (including opioids) — serious breathing problems can occur.
  • Not suitable in severe breathing problems, sleep apnoea, severe liver disease or myasthenia gravis.
  • Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically advised.
  • Stopping suddenly after regular use can cause withdrawal — always follow the pharmacist's tapering plan.

Storage

Store below 25°C in the original packaging. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
