How it works
Diazepam is a long-acting benzodiazepine that boosts GABA activity in the brain, helping to reduce severe anxiety and muscle tension. The 2mg dose is typically used as a starting strength, particularly for older adults or those new to treatment.
How to take
Adults: usually 2mg up to three times a day as needed for severe anxiety, or as directed. Lower doses are used in older adults. Treatment is short-term — typically no longer than 2–4 weeks including tapering.
Possible side effects
- Drowsiness or sedation
- Light-headedness or unsteadiness, especially in older adults
- Reduced concentration or memory
- Muscle weakness
- Less commonly: low mood, confusion or paradoxical agitation
Important warnings
- Risk of dependence and tolerance — only used short term (typically a few days, up to 2–4 weeks including tapering).
- Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy or impaired.
- Do not combine with alcohol or other sedating medicines (including opioids) — serious breathing problems can occur.
- Not suitable in severe breathing problems, sleep apnoea, severe liver disease or myasthenia gravis.
- Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically advised.
- Stopping suddenly after regular use can cause withdrawal — always follow the pharmacist's tapering plan.
Storage
Store below 25°C in the original packaging. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
