How it works

Sumatriptan is a 5-HT1 receptor agonist (a 'triptan'). It works by narrowing widened blood vessels around the brain and blocking pain signals, helping to ease migraine headache and associated symptoms such as nausea and light sensitivity.

How to take

Adults: take one 50mg tablet at the first sign of a migraine headache (not an aura). If symptoms improve and then return, a second tablet may be taken after at least 2 hours. Maximum 300mg in 24 hours. Do not use to prevent migraine.

Possible side effects

  • Tingling, warmth or heaviness in the body
  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Tightness in the chest, throat or jaw (usually short-lasting)

Important warnings

  • Not suitable if you have heart disease, a history of stroke or TIA, uncontrolled high blood pressure or peripheral vascular disease.
  • Do not combine with other triptans, ergotamine or MAOI antidepressants.
  • Tell your pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or take SSRIs/SNRIs.
  • Speak to a pharmacist or GP if you need triptans on more than 10 days a month — this can cause medication-overuse headache.

Storage

Store below 25°C in the original packaging. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
