How it works

Naproxen is an NSAID that reduces pain, inflammation and swelling by blocking the body's production of prostaglandins. As a P medicine it is supplied only as a small short-course pack (9 tablets) for primary period pain.

How to take

Women aged 15–50: take 2 tablets (500mg) at first sign of period pain, then 1 tablet (250mg) every 6–8 hours as needed. Maximum 3 tablets in 24 hours. Do not use for more than 3 days. Take with or after food.

Possible side effects

  • Indigestion, stomach pain or nausea
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Less commonly: stomach ulcers, raised blood pressure or kidney effects

Important warnings

  • Take with food to reduce stomach upset.
  • Not suitable if you have a history of stomach ulcers, severe heart, kidney or liver disease.
  • Avoid in the third trimester of pregnancy; speak to a pharmacist if pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Tell your pharmacist if you take blood thinners, steroids, SSRIs or other NSAIDs.
  • Stomach protection (e.g. omeprazole) may be recommended alongside.
